Play Authored By Professor Emeritus
To Be Presented May 20-21 In York Hall
By Pat JaCoby
Academic
Matters, a play about faculty life written by Mel Green,
professor emeritus of biology at UCSD, will be presented May
20 and 21 in York Hall 2622 at 8 p.m. as part of the Revelle
College 40th anniversary celebration.
Free and open to the
public, the play concerns two typical science professors and
a graduate student coping with the challenges of their profession—personality
clashes, competition, publishing, obtaining research funds,
and remaining altruistic when great success seems imminent.
Hanging in the balance is a treatment for cancer that would
benefit all mankind.
Green obtained his
Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Illinois, and conducted
his post-doctoral research at Cal Tech under the guidance of
Nobel laureate Renato Dulbecco. He joined the UCSD faculty in
1963, where his research has been in the areas of molecular
and cellular biology with a focus on medical topics such as
cancer, AIDS, and wound repair.
