The paparazzi will
be out in force and autograph seekers on hand when The Preuss
School at the University of California, San Diego, stages
“A Night on Broadway” Oct. 28 as its third annual
benefit at the Evans Garage, Old Pacific Highway.
Search lights will
mark the site for some 250 guests expected to walk a red carpet
into the “garage,” renowned for its collection
of classic cars. Proceeds from the event will benefit four
aspects of the school: student transportation; math, science
and engineering studies; mentoring and tutoring assistance,
and visual and performing arts.
Preuss School students
will perform a “Broadway Review” as one of the
highlights of the dinner event, which also will include tours
of the world-class collection of antique cars and dancing
to the Barry Allen Cohen Orchestra.
Serving as co-chairs
are Hank and Robin Nordhoff and Fiona Tudor.
Reservations are
available by calling (858) 534-1404.
Funds raised during
the Preuss School “Classic Cars for Classic Kids”
event contribute to the $1 billion fundraising goal of The
Campaign for UCSD: Imagine What’s Next.
Jointly chartered
by the San Diego Unified School District and the University
of California, San Diego, The Preuss School opened in 1999
to provide an intensive college preparatory curriculum to
low income student populations and to improve educational
practices in the middle and high school years. Located on
the UCSD campus in a $14 million facility funded entirely
by community donors, the school is now fully enrolled with
782 students in grades 6 through 12. In the graduating class
of 2005, 91 percent of Preuss School students were admitted
to four-year universities, 43 percent are attending a UC campus,
and 13 percent are attending prestigious private colleges.
