Fall 2005 and Winter 2006 quarters, up 633 students for a 3.7
percent increase from the previous year.

17,137 admitted for the Fall quarter and 650 for the Winter
2006 quarter.
Mae Brown, assistant

that the academic quality of the incoming freshmen class continues
to be outstanding, as this year’s group of admitted students
attained a mean high school grade point average (GPA) of 4.05
and an average composite Scholastic Assessment Test
(SAT 1) score of 1314.
Of the 17,787 freshmen,
7,093 were identified as Eligible in the Local Context (ELC),
meaning that these are UC eligible students who were identified
as the top four percent of their high school graduating class.
The average GPA of these ELC student is 4.17 and their composite
SAT 1 score is 1298.
More than 1,600, or
9.1 percent, of the newly admitted freshmen are from Sam Diego
and Imperial Counties. The largest percentage of the admitted
freshmen, at 44.4 percent, come from Los Angeles, followed by
San Francisco at 24.5 percent.
The most popular majors
chosen by this class, in order, are biology, chemistry, bioengineering,
political science and economics. All UC campuses are continuing
to see more women than men among the newly admitted classes,
with UCSD recording 57.6 percent females compared to 42.3 percent
males. Approximately 22.8 percent admitted to UCSD for Fall
2005 and Winter 2006 represent the first in their family to
attend college.
Data for the admission
of underrepresented students in the Fall 2005 and Winter 2006
UCSD freshman class show a 5.2 percent increase, compared to
the overall campus increase of 3.7 percent. A total 346 African-Americans

85 Native Americans (up slightly from 83 last year) were admitted
in the Fall 2005 and Winter 2006 class.
