In rebuilding the
World Trade Center site, a city and a nation set out to examine
what it means to be American and the leader of a global community.
Never before has the United States undergone a project of
such sheer size and symbolic significance. Paul Goldberger
visits the Revelle Forum to speak about his new book on the
World Trade Center site, Up From Zero: Politics, Architecture,
and the Rebuilding of New York (Random House). Goldberger
wrote on Architecture for The New York Times for
25 years and is currently the Architecture critic of The
New Yorker magazine. In Up from Zero, he vividly
recounts the story of the design selection process, describing
how conflicting pressures from economic hopes, politics, grief,
hubris and powerful egos have shaped decisions about the project,
and offering his own evaluation of the design and its implications.
Advance registration advised. Registration fee is $35. No
refunds. When registering, refer to section ID #047894. Call
858-534-3400 to register. The talk will be followed by a booksigning.
