UCSD TO HOLD CAMPUS 9/11 COMMEMORATION

A commemorative program to mark the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and remember those who lost their lives will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Price Center Plaza at the University of California, San Diego.

Chancellor Robert C. Dynes has invited all members of the UCSD community to attend the one-half hour program of reflections on 9/11 and, for those who wish to do so, remain for a religious/spiritual service led by Mark Padrez, director of the Office of Religious Affairs at UCSD. Representatives from a number of faiths will join him in the service from 12:35 to 1 p.m.

A highlight of the commemoration program will be dedication by Dynes and Jenn Brown, Associated Student president, of a plaque and boxed flowering shade tree which will subsequently be planted at the west end of Warren Mall. The plaque inscription reads: 'Dedicated in Memory of the Victims of September 11, 2001. The UCSD Community Remembers. September 11, 2002."

The program will open with Veterans Staff Association representatives Kenneth Edwards and Al Hilde presenting colors. Faculty member Phil Larson, Department of Music, will sing "The Star Spangled Banner" after which the VSA will post flags.

Dynes and Brown will give brief remarks, and attendees will then share a moment of silence, ending with the chiming of the University carillon by Scott Paulson, University carillonneur. The program will conclude with the singing of "God Bless America" by staff member Sandra Stewart, External Relations.

Joining Padrez at the spiritual service will be Rabbi Lisa Goldstein, representing the Jewish community at UCSD; Lynn Neu, the Catholic community; Dr. Omar Abdeen, the Muslim community; Rock Hunter, representing the faculty/staff Christian Fellowship, and the Rev. Gary Anderson of the Wesley Foundation, who will speak on behalf of faiths not represented at the service.

During the week of Sept. 9-13 a banner listing the 3,019 names of victims of the terrorist attacks will be displayed in the Price Center foyer, and later moved to other campus locations.
