Liberties and the Legacy of McCarthyism

By Stephanie Stevens

UCSD Extension is pleased to announce prize-winning investigative reporter Haynes Johnson, (former Washington Post journalist, PBS NewsHour commentator) speaks on Tuesday, October 25th, 7:00-8:30 p.m., as part of UCSD’s Revelle Forum at The Neurosciences Institute, a series of lectures and public interviews with leading figures from the worlds of arts and culture, current events, and the media. Johnson will present his compelling new examination of the McCarthy era and its enduring legacy in American politics including his reflections on how our civil liberties can be revoked in the name of national security. Admission to this event is $35 per person. Registrations may be made by calling UCSD Extension at 858-882-8000, or online at extension.ucsd.edu/revelleforum. The series takes place in the 350-seat auditorium of The Neurosciences Institute located at 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive (parking is free).

Pulitzer Prize-winning former Washington Post journalist Haynes Johnson—renowned for his appearances on the PBS NewsHour and author of five bestselling books—discusses his new book, The Age of Anxiety: McCarthyism to Terrorism, a compelling examination of the McCarthy era and its enduring influence on American politics. Johnson vividly depicts McCarthy’s anti-Communist crusade, examining the roles both of Eisenhower and others who condoned McCarthy’s actions, and of foes such as Edward R. Murrow. Johnson discovers powerful historic parallels between that era and today, arguing that once again our civil liberties and our Constitution are at risk, as we balance the need for national security against our rights to personal freedom. Advance registration strongly advised. Registration fee is $35. No refunds. When registering, refer to section ID number 052978. Call 858-882-8000 to register. The talk will be followed by a booksigning.
