MEDIA ADVISORY
(A chance to ride a school bus)
EVENT:
Press conference/school bus ride to address the transportation
dilemma faced by The Preuss School, which lacks school buses
to get students to the prep school facility.
DATE/TIME:
7:45 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2004.
LOCATION:
Bus stop at 4150 El Cajon Blvd., near the new intersection with
Marlborough Ave.
PARTICIPANTS:
Doris Alvarez, The Preuss School principal; approximately 55
students, and Jim Spencer, member of The Jack in the Box Foundation
board of directors.
BACKGROUND:
Without free school bus transportation, more than 700 students
at The Preuss School at UCSD, each from a low income family
and each vying to become the first in their family to attend
college,
would be unable to get to school. The students have bus passes.
They have bus stops. They have bus schedules. The only thing
missing--the school buses.
Budget cuts in Sacramento
forced the local school district to
eliminate bus service to The Preuss School. For the second year
in
a row, the school has to lease the 15 buses it needs for the
2004-
2005 school year, so it is turning to the community for help.
Jack
in the Box Foundation was the first to step up. One bus lease
for
the 200-school day totals $25,000; the school hopes to raise
$375,000 for the needed 15 buses.
On October
12, students will gather at the El Cajon Blvd. bus
stop for their daily bus ride to school. Principal Alvarez will
discuss Preuss’ transportation issues and accept a $25,000
check from The Jack in the Box Foundation to lease one bus
for the school year. News media can join Dr. Alvarez and the
students for the 25-minute school bus ride to the school on
the
UCSD campus. Return transportation from Preuss to the bus
stop will be provided.
