UCSD Extension is
pleased to announce that Ruth Reichl, author and Editor-In-Chief
of Gourmet Magazine, will speak on Tuesday, April
12th, 7:00-8:30 p.m., as part of UCSD’s Revelle Forum
at The Neurosciences Institute, a series of lectures and public
interviews with leading figures from the worlds of arts and
culture, current events, and the media. In conversation with
UCSD Professor of Visual Arts John Welchman, Reichl will speak
about her latest book, Garlic and Sapphires, recounting
her astonishing adventures as restaurant critic of The
New York Times. Admission to this event is $35 per person.
Registrations may be made by calling UCSD Extension at 858-534-3400,
or online at http://revelleforum.ucsd.edu.
The series takes place in the 350-seat auditorium of The Neurosciences
Institute located at 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive (parking
is free).
In her new book,
Garlic and Sapphires, Ruth Reichl continues the fascinating
saga of her culinary life, first recounted in her best-selling
Tender at the Bone and Comfort Me with Apples.
As the most powerful restaurant critic in America at The
New York Times, Reichl devised elaborate disguises to
conceal her identity from obsequious restaurateurs, writing
“double reviews” to contrast her dining experiences
when undisguised with those of a series of meticulously constructed
alter egos. Her extraordinary latest memoir is filled with
entertaining, witty, intimate, and revealing anecdotes of
the consequences of her playful deceptions and how they unexpectedly
affected her own character, expectations and appetite. Advance
registration strongly advised. Registration fee is $35. No
refunds. When registering, refer to section ID number 050562.
Call 858-534-3400 to register. The talk will be followed by
a booksigning.
