Revelle College To End 40th
Anniversary Year With Varied Events
By Pat JaCoby
Revelle College
will end the yearlong anniversary celebration of the 40 years
since its founding as UCSD’s first undergraduate campus
with activities ranging from an opening alumni reception and
original play May 20-21 to the culminating Watermelon Drop June
3.
Alumni, faculty, and
staff of Revelle College are invited to the reception May 20
from 6-8 p.m. at the Faculty Club, to be followed by an Open
House from noon to 2 p.m. May 21 at the Revelle College Administration
building.
In conjunction with
the alumni weekend, an original play by Mel Green, professor
emeritus in biology, will be presented at 8 p.m. May 20-21 in
York Hall 2622. Entitled Academic Matters, the play
concerns two typical science professors and a graduate student
coping with the challenges of their profession. The production
is free and open to the public.
Continuing the anniversary
celebration, the college will present a spring symposium entitled
“Roger Revelle’s Vision for the Undergraduate College
System” at 3 p.m. June 1 at the Faculty Club. The session
will be an informal discussion by some of UCSD’s founding
fathers, including Jim Arnold, Fred Spiess, Avrum Stroll, Leonard
Newmark and Herb York.
At the conclusion of
the symposium, members of the Revelle College graduating class
of 2005 will introduce their senior gift project—installation
of a memorial sculpture of Roger Revelle on the Revelle Plaza.
The 40th annual Watermelon
Drop--UCSD’s first established campus tradition-- will
be held at noon June 3 with the “drop” made by the
Watermelon Queen from the top of Urey Hall. An anniversary Finale
Celebration will follow on the plaza with its traditional end-of-quarter
barbecue, free watermelon, activities and entertainment.
