13th Among 500 Universities Worldwide
By Pat JaCoby
An academic
ranking of 500 universities by the Institute of Higher Education
at Shanghai Jiao Tong University lists the University of California,
San Diego as 13th in the world, based on academic and research
performance.
Indicators used in
the ranking included alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and
Fields Medals, highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject
categories, articles published in Nature and Science,
articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science
Citation Index, and academic performance with respect to the
size of the institution.
The world ranking
of the first 15 universities included Harvard, first; Stanford,
second; Cambridge, UK, third; UC Berkeley, fourth; MIT, fifth;
Cal Tech, sixth; Princeton, seventh; Oxford, UK, eighth; Columbia,
ninth; Chicago, 10th; Yale, 11th; Cornell, 12th; UCSD, 13th;
Tokyo, 14th, and Pennsylvania, 15th. The complete listing can
be found at http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2004/methodology.htm
In December, a new
global ranking by The (London) Times Higher Education
Supplement--based on a survey of 1,300 academics in
88 countries—listed UCSD as 24th in the table of the world’s
200 best universities. This table included such non-academic
factors as the ratio of faculty to student numbers and a university’s
success in attracting foreign students.
