Applicant Data for Fall 2007

February 24, 2007

By Pat JaCoby

The University of California, San Diego has received 45,040 freshman applications for Fall 2007, up 1,454 students for a 3.3 percent increase from the previous year. In the UC system, the number of UCSD’s applicants is second only to UCLA.

Mae Brown, assistant vice chancellor for Admissions and Enrollment Services, noted that the academic quality of the applicant pool continues to be outstanding, as this year’s applicants attained a mean high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.76 and an average SAT Reasoning test score of 590, 627, and 596 for Reading, Math and Writing, respectively.

Of the 45,040 freshman applicants, 8,063 were identified as Eligible in the Local Context (ELC), meaning that these are UC eligible students who were identified as the top four percent of their high school graduating class. The average GPA of these ELC students is 4.15 and their average SAT Reasoning test score is 619, 652, and 624 for Reading, Math and Writing, respectively.

More than 4,100, or 9.1 percent, of the applied freshmen are from San Diego and Imperial Counties. The largest percentage of the applied freshmen, at 45.4 percent, come from Los Angeles, followed by San Francisco at 23.5 percent.

The most popular majors chosen by this applicant pool, in order, are biology, economics, chemistry, psychology and political science. All UC campuses are continuing to see more women than men among the applicants, with UCSD recording 54.1 percent females compared to 45.4 percent males. Approximately 24.1 percent who represent the first in their family to attend college applied to UCSD for Fall 2007.

Data for the freshman applications of underrepresented students for Fall 2007 show a 6.0 percent increase, compared to the overall campus increase of 3.3 percent. A total 1,468 African-Americans (up from 1,416 last year), 4,861 Mexican Americans (up from 4,537 last year), 1,719 Latinos (up from 1,604 last year), and 246 Native Americans (down from 265 last year) applied for the Fall 2007 term.

Students will be notified by March 31 regarding admissions decisions. UCSD figures in the graph below.
