UCSD Faculty Members
Named as Fulbright Scholars

Four University of California, San Diego faculty members have been awarded Fulbright Scholar grants for study in Europe during the 2006-2007 academic year, according to the U.S. State Department and J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Additionally, UCSD has been named host for four Fulbright Visiting Scholars.

UCSD recipients of the grants to either lecture or conduct research are:

Joel Pascal Conte, Department of Structural Engineering, who will attend G.d’ Annunzio University in Pescara, Italy. His research project covers “Computational Seismic Reliability Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Buildings and Earthquake Protective Systems;”

Richard Louis Lieber, Departments of Orthopaedics and Bioengineering, School of Medicine, who will conduct research at the University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden, on “Intraoperative Measurement of Human Upper-Extremity Muscle Properties;”

Michael E. Parrish, Department of History, who will lecture and do research at the University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland, on “American Legal History; Supreme Court in Comparative Perspective” and hold the Bicentennial Chair in American Studies;

Donald Wesling, Litererature Department, who will lecture on “American Literature” at the University of Debrecen in Debrecen, Hungary, and hold the Laszio Orszagh Chair in American Studies.

Visting grantees to be hosted by UCSD in 2006-2007 include Rodolfo Valentino Campos Reyes from the Autonomous University of Baja California, Tecate; Kissao Gnandi from the University of Lome, Togo; Minati Panda, from the Jawaharlai Nehru University, New Delhi, and Oleg Ponyatov, from Niyazov Treatment and Consulting Center, Turkmenistan.

The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program operates in 150 countries worldwide. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
