5K RAISES FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIP; CLEAN CAR FOR CHANCELLOR

While students will benefit by more than $175,000 in scholarship funds raised by the recent Chancellor's Challenge 5k Run/Walk for Scholars, Chancellor Robert Dynes will benefit by way of a clean car provided at noon Nov. 27 on Library Walk by Associated Students President Doc Khaleghi.

The challenge prior to the fifth annual run/walk was for the A.S. president to wash Chancellor Dynes' car if the Chancellor beat him; if Khaleghi had the winning time, the Chancellor would host a barbecue. Khaleghi came in a respectable 241st out of 719 entries. The Chancellor came in an even more respectable 124th. Khaleghi lost and now has to pay up.

Frances Dynes Hellman, the Chancellor's wife, came in 171st. Since Chancellor Dynes had pledged to personally contribute $25 for everyone who beat him to the finish line, and his wife had promised a personal $25 donation for every woman who beat her, their contributions were $3,075 and $525 respectively.

Additionally, the Chancellor contributed $40,000 of undesignated funds. Event chair and former trustee Charlie Robins and his wife, Mary Louise, contributed $15,000 to offer a $55,000 match in sponsorships. Included among these major sponsors were Audrey Geisel, Paul Montrone for Fisher Scientific, and Regent John J. Moores for the San Diego Padres. All proceeds go to support research scholarships and community scholarships for undergraduate students at UCSD.

Among winners in the various 5k categories were Michael Breen, faculty/staff, male; Terri Dowie, faculty/staff female; James Nielsen, student-male; Sally Anderson, student-female; Robert Starkey, senior-male; Kevin Harley, alumni/sponsor-male; Tamara Mau, alumni/sponsor-female.

Next year's run has been scheduled for Oct. 19, 2001.
