UCSD PRIVATE SUPPORT REACHES
RECORD LEVELS
The University of California,
San Diego today announced that private support for fiscal year
1999-2000 amounted to $135 million, an increase of $19 million over
the prior fiscal year and $77 million more than the 1996-97 fiscal
year, just three years ago.
"As UCSD celebrates its
40th anniversary, we are reminded of how important the enthusiastic
support of our community has been, and continues to be, in our ability
to succeed and reach new goals," said Robert C. Dynes, UCSD
chancellor. "Last year's success in fund-raising efforts was
crucial as we pursue opportunities essential to this campus, and the
San Diego community. We are truly grateful and honored to have this
level of support and involvement."
Reflected in the 1999-2000
private support totals are gifts of one-million dollars or more for
several major campus initiatives, including the UCSD Cancer Center,
Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering, UCSD Cardiovascular
Center and support for fellowships, scholarships and endowed chairs.
The UCSD Foundation, a
nonprofit corporation formed in 1972 to generate and manage the
university's charitable donations, currently manages assets in excess
of $275 million. The Foundation has recently appointed five new
trustees. Accepting three-year terms which began July 1st, are:
* Linden Blue, Vice Chairman
of General Atomics
* William Comer, President
and CEO, SIBIA Neurosciences Inc. and Director of Epimmune Inc.
* Stanley Foster, President
of Foster Investment Corporation
* Richard Hertzberg, Founder,
President and CEO, Enpex Corporation
* Joan Jacobs, community
leader and arts patron
Also joining the Board this
year are two trustee representatives:
* Beth Binger, representative
for the UCSD Alumni Association, Principal of Beth Binger
Communications
* Paul Peterson,
representative from the UCSD Board of Overseers, retired Senior
