INTEL, INTERVU AND UCSD DELIVER UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION PROGRAMMING OVER THE INTERNET
UCTVonline.org: First Internet Program to Offer General Public Access to
Diverse Educational Programming from UC Campuses
SAN DIEGO, October 19, 1999 - In a three-way partnership, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), INTERVU Inc. (Nasdaq: ITVU), a leading service provider for Internet audio and video delivery solutions, and Intel Corp., today launched UCTVonline.org, a Web site featuring enrichment broadcast programming that will draw upon the vast intellectual, scientific and artistic talent of the University of California campuses.
This initial three-month pilot program, sponsored by Intel, is designed to demonstrate the role technology can play in delivering social and educational information via the Web. UCTVonline.org's programming will originate from UCSD-TV, an independent, non-commercial, broadcast station that operates from the UCSD campus. INTERVU will utilize its patented distributed streaming media network to deliver UCTVonline.org's broadband video content, allowing a worldwide audience to access the high-quality productions featuring important research and cultural activities taking place in and around the UC system. The streaming video is being delivered at 300 Kilobits per second (Kbps) for high-speed Internet users and at 56 Kbps for dial-up Internet users.
"This online initiative is a demonstration of the University of California's strong support for the integration of technology and education and our leadership role among the educational community in using media technology," said Richard Atkinson, president, University of California. "While this initial broadcast reflects only a portion of the University's activities, it represents a major step forward in expanding the educational and cultural reach of all of our campuses."
Mary Walshok, UCSD associate vice chancellor and UCSD-TV general manager added, "The general public rarely has the opportunity to see University of California researchers and community leaders discuss their important work in detail. Now, with the help of INTERVU and Intel, we can provide a unique and valuable service to people across the globe."
In order to reach a diverse audience, a wide-range of topics will be available on the Web site, such as: "OperaTalk - Lohengrin," "Understanding Bipolar Disorder," "The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam," and "Gama Ray Bursts - The Puzzle of God's Firecrackers."
"INTERVU is pleased to be the selected streaming media service provider for this first-time, innovative UCSD Web-based program," said Harry Gruber, chairman and CEO of INTERVU Inc. "We believe that the delivery of audio and video over the Internet will have a profound impact on educational institutions and their ability to share their educational and social information with individuals and organizations worldwide. We hope this will be the beginning of a long-term relationship with the UC system and are confident that our streaming media technology will help extend its educational content to the masses."
INTERVU will be working with broadband network providers, such as digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modem providers, to ensure that UC alumni, professors, students, and the general public have high-quality access to this educational content in their homes and offices.
"Intel is excited to be working with UCSD and INTERVU on this program," said Tom Galvin, Director Market Development, Content Group. "The combination of fast broadband connections, powerful PCs, and rich, streaming media has allowed UCSD to deliver their unique educational and social programming to a worldwide audience in a very simple, compelling fashion. This is a great example of how the Internet and the PC platform are changing the world of digital content distribution."
Long-term plans call for the development of streamed programming focusing on seminars and research briefings; development and credentialing programs; and eventually, academic, for-credit courses.
