International Education Week at
UCSD Nov. 13-17 to Feature Talks on
Latin America, North Korea, Films, Food, Displays

Experience a variety of international cultures through interactive displays, food, art, films, and timely, topical lectures on such issues as political change in Latin America and the economy in North Korea when the University of California, San Diego presents International Education Week (IEW) Nov. 13-17 on the UCSD campus. The events are open to the public and most are free unless otherwise noted.

Among events on Nov. 13 will be a 5 to 7 p.m. reception and discussion, U.S. Diplomacy and the Challenge of Political Change in Latin America, in the Weaver Center at the Institute of the Americas. The participants will include former ambassadors to Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. The event is sponsored by the UCSD Institute of the Americas and the American Academy of Diplomacy of Washington, D.C.

At 7 p.m. that evening UCSD professor Susan Shirk will lecture on Inside the North Korean Economy in the Great Hall, International House. Shirk is director of the UCSD Institute of Global Cooperation and Conflict and former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The event is sponsored by the UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), International House, and International Affairs Group.

Activities on Nov. 14 will include How They See Us: An Evening with International Students from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the International Center Lounge. A panel of international students will share their experiences on a college campus in the United States.

An International Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 on Library Walk. UCSD students from all over the globe will celebrate their cultures in displays, music, dance, and food.

UN-doing: Global Politics and UN Reform with Hans Corell will be presented from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Davis/Riverside Room of the UCSD Price Center. Corell is former United Nations Under-Secretary General and Legal Officer.

The International Center Café – Closing Ceremony and Lunch will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in the International Center Patio and Lounge. The Longfellow Ballet Folklorico Dance Group will perform. Lunch is $4.

Among other programs to be presented during IEW at UCSD will be those on study abroad as a major in political science, linguistics, the visual arts, Latin American studies, computer science and engineering, international studies, literature, theatre, and critical gender.

IEW attendees will have the opportunity to express themselves by painting on UCSD’s contribution to the Art Miles Mural Project. The project serves to “create global harmony” by joining the mural painting of people from more than 100 countries for the purpose of peace and world understanding.  Attendees also may paint and personalize a pair of canvas shoes to be donated to children in Africa. Both painting projects are sponsored by the United Nations Student Alliance, Art Miles Murals Project and Student Organizations & Leadership Opportunities (SOLO).

Other IEW activities will include a job fair, an international career panel, a Peace Corps presentation, programs abroad sessions, films, children’s art and cuisines from around the world.
