SCHOOL STUDENTS STILL STUDYING, WHILE OTHER STUDENTS ARE AT PLAY – EIGHTH
GRADE EXHIBITION SIGNALS THE END OF AN EXTRA LONG SCHOOL YEAR The Preuss School at the University of California San Diego will hold its end-of-year Eighth Grade Exhibition this Thursday, July 25th. This year’s Exhibition entitled 2002: A Celebration of Learning will showcase projects that Preuss School 8th graders have done during the academic year. The Preuss School holds this annual Eighth Grade Exhibition in place of a formal 8th grade promotion ceremony. Explains Doris Alvarez, Principal/Director, “The core focus of our school is academics and preparation for college. We believe that this is just another important step along the path to college acceptance.” “At the Preuss School, we have a longer school day and longer school year. While other public school students have been out enjoying summer break for quite some time, our students have continued to apply themselves in the classroom.” Preuss School students will begin their summer break on Friday, July 26th and return to school with the rest of San Diego’s school students on September 3rd. One hundred students have selected academic projects from core subjects such as History, English, Science and Spanish to showcase on Thursday. Among displays are: a history project entitled Bill of Rights and science project entitled: Are Penicillin Bacteria Resistant to Ultraviolet Light? Over 200 parents, relatives and friends are expected to attend the Exhibition. The schedule for the Exhibition is as follows: 10:30 – 11:00 – Viewing of Student Projects 11:00 – 11:30 – Welcome by Dr. Doris Alvarez and Student Speakers 11:30 – 12:00 – Presentation of Certificates to the class of 2006 The event will be held in the Walton Multipurpose Center on the Preuss School campus. The Preuss School is a public middle/high school dedicated to providing an intensive college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. Using a high degree of personal attention and parental involvement, we are preparing these students to succeed at the University of California and other selective colleges.
