- Former Norwegian
prime minister and director/general of the World Health Organization
to speak on health and environment at UCSD
- Gro Harlem
Brundtland, Norwegian physician, political leader
and health advocate, will speak on Investing in Health
and the Environment for Economic Development. Brundtland’s
lecture is the first in the UCSD 2004-2005 Convocation Series.
It is sponsored by the UCSD Council of Provosts and the Helen
Edison Lecture Series. Free and open to the public.

BACKGROUND:
- Brundtland also
is former chair of the World Commission on Environment and
Development, an advocate for children’s health issues,
and the mother of four. She served 10 years as prime minister
of Norway. She has focused her energies on sustainable and
equitable global health, worldwide economic relations, and
the prevention of critical environmental and health disasters.
She received her medical training at the University of Oslo
and the Harvard School of Public Health.
- “The way
that we, as an international community, work to address current
crisis and prevent future ones, will determine whether we
succeed, or fail, in our shared efforts to advance global
development, growth, and peace,” says Brundtland.
