UCSD POSTS RECORD FRESHMAN, TRANSFER APPLICATIONS FOR FALL ’02

The University of California, San Diego posted a record 48,959 undergraduate applications for Fall 2002, including 41,198 freshman applications and 7,761 transfer applications. The number of freshman applications was second highest in the UC system.

The total number of applications to UCSD is up 8.8 percent from 2001's record count, the highest percent increase in the UC system this year.. Freshman applications are up 8.2 percent and transfer applications are up 11.9 percent. This marks the third year that transfer applications have been exceptionally strong.

The academic quality of UCSD’s freshman applicants also remains strong, with the average high school grade point average at 3.72 and the average SAT composite score at 1206.

Comparisons of the Fall 2001/2002 UCSD application pools’ gender and racial/ethnic breakdown show that freshmen applications from women rose 8.4 percent, compared to 7.4 percent for men. However, transfer applications record a 10.4 percent increase for men, compared to a 13.4 percent increase for women.

At the freshman level, applications from African-American students increased by 140 to 1,332, a rise of 11.7 percent. Mexican American applications increased by 386 to 3,923, a rise of 10.9 percent. Native American applications increased 17.1 percent over last year’s 210 to 246. Latino applications increased by 170 to 1,325, a rise of 14.7 percent. Asian-American applications increased by 939 to 12,060 , a rise of 8.4 percent. Filipino-American applications increased by 152 to 1,983, a rise of 8.3 percent. Caucasian applications increased by 1,281 to 15,376 , a rise of 9.1 percent.

The three most popular declared majors continue to be Social Sciences (19.2 percent), Engineering (18.0 percent), and Science/Math (18.0 percent). Of the three, Science/Math had the largest increase (13.2 percent) over the Fall 2001 applicant pool.
