Pat Jacoby, (858) 534-7404 Included in UCSD’s $1.7 billion in annual revenues was a record $550 million awarded to conduct research, a 7.9 percent increase over the previous year’s $510 million and a measure of UCSD’s fifth place national ranking in federal research awards. The $4.6 billion national economic
impact total is almost 13 times the $356.7 million that the campus received
from the state of California last year. In addition, UCSD’s July
2001 through June 2002 expenditures had an indirect economic impact of
$2.5 billion as they rippled through the local economy. The principal sources of revenue to the campus were: income generated by UCSD hospitals and clinics ($435.5 million); federal awards for research ($411 million); funding from the state of California ($356.7 million); educational activities ($143.6 million); private gifts, grants and contracts ($129.7 million); tuition and fees ($129.6 million); auxiliary enterprises such as housing and bookstores ($85.2 million); other sources ($21.8), and the City and County of San Diego ($4.1 million). The UCSD Office of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services (TechTIPS) links academic research to the commercial world of marketable products. Last year, TechTIPS, along with the UC Office of Technology Transfer:
UCSD is planning to spend close to $800 million on capital plan improvements—new construction and equipment—over the next five years to handle the campus’ extensive growth. These projects include research buildings, new classrooms, conference and housing facilities and parking structures. With a total employment of 21,226,
UCSD is the third largest employer in San Diego, following the federal
government and the state of California. It had a total of 23,548 students
