UCSD ANNOUNCES FRESHMAN ADMISSIONS
DATA FOR FALL 2003/WINTER 2004 QUARTERS

The University of California, San Diego has admitted 17,567 freshmen for the Fall 2003 and Winter 2004 quarters, selected from a record 43,435 freshmen applications (second highest in the University of California system). Of the total admitted students, 1,677 were admitted for the Winter, 2004 quarter.

The group of admitted students is well prepared scholastically, with a mean high school grade point average (GPA) of 4.04 and an average composite Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) score of 1288.

Of the 17,567 freshmen, 6,899 were identified as Eligible in the Local Context (ELC), meaning that they are UC eligible students who were identified as the top four percent of their high school graduating class. The average GPA of these ELC students is 4.17, and their composite SAT I score is 1271.

More than 1,800 of the newly admitted freshmen are from San Diego and Imperial Counties. The most popular majors chosen by this class continue to be biology, bioengineering and economics, followed by biochemistry (a new entry) and psychology.

All UC campuses are continuing to see more women than men enrolling, with the new admitted class at UCSD recording 56.9 percent females compared to 42.4 percent males. A total 24.3 percent admitted to UCSD for 2003 represent the first in their family to attend college.

Data for the admission of underrepresented students in the freshman class for Fall 2003 and Winter 2004 show a 32 percent increase in the number of underrepresented students. A total of 363 African-Americans was admitted, up eight percent over the 2002 figure; 1,626 Mexican Americans were admitted, up 7.1 percent; 534 Latinos were admitted, up 12.2 percent, and 74 Native Americans were admitted, down 7.6 percent.

Mae Brown, interim assistant vice chancellor Enrollment Management, noted that “we are very pleased with the exceptional academic quality of the admitted class and its increased diversity.”

Admitted freshmen have until May 1, 2003 to indicate whether they will attend UCSD.
