Sims are among 300 students selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,093 mathematics, science, and engineering majors who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. Of the 2003-2004 Goldwater scholars, 161 are men, 139 are women and all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective. The Goldwater scholarships will cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7,500 per year for each student recipient. Mogri, Earl Warren College, is majoring in bioengineering and biotechnology. His career goal is earning a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, teaching at the university level, and researching signaling pathways in the brain. Sims, Roger Revelle College, is majoring in chemistry. His career goal is earning a Ph.D. in physical chemistry and biophysics, teaching at the university level, and researching/applying physical chemistry to biophysical problems. Because of their superior academic qualifications, Goldwater scholars have garnered the attention of post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater scholars have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Awards, and numerous other distinguished fellowships. The Goldwater Foundation, based
in Springfield, Va., is a federally endowed agency whose scholarship program
honors Senator Barry M. Goldwater. The program was designed to encourage
outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences,
and engineering. It is the premier undergraduate award in these fields.
In its 15-year history, the Goldwater Foundation has awarded 3,962 scholarships
totaling approximately 39 million dollars.
