COMMENCEMENT RITES JUNE 8, 14 AND 15
TO HONOR NEARLY 4,000 UCSD GRADUATES


More than 3,600 undergraduates and 376 graduates will receive their degrees during commencement ceremonies to be held at the University of California, San Diego June 8, 14 and 15.

Graduation ceremonies for the UCSD School of Medicine will be held June 8 on the school’s east lawn, while commencement rites for UCSD’s five undergraduate colleges, the International Relations and Pacific Studies Graduate School (IR/PS), and the Graduate Studies and Research Division are scheduled June 14 and 15 at varied campus locations.

Nobel Laureate Sydney Brenner, a professor at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and one of the past century’s leading pioneers in genetics and molecular biology, will speak at the School of Medicine’s graduation. A total 141 new physicians are scheduled to receive their M.D. degrees during 11 a.m. ceremonies, including eight to 10 class members who will receive joint PhD./M.D. degrees. Dean Edward Holmes will conduct the rites, to be followed by a reception on the lawn west of the Medical Teaching Facility.

Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante will be the guest speaker at Thurgood Marshall College ceremonies, scheduled at 8:30 a.m. June 14 on the Recreation and Intramural Athletic Complex (RIMAC) field. Approximately 700 graduates and their guests are expected to hear Bustamante speak. (For further information, e-mail saunders@ucsd.edu)

Warren College will hold its graduation at 3 p.m. June 14, also on RIMAC field, with senior Hazel Giusto selected as student speaker. Some 900 students are due to receive their diplomas. (For details e-mail bwilless@ucsd.edu)

Muir College graduation ceremonies are scheduled at 8:30 a.m. June 15 on RIMAC field, with seniors Nick Lieberkenecht and Corrie Kent representing the class as student speakers. Some 750 Muir students are graduating.

Eleanor Roosevelt College will hold its ceremony for some 500 graduates at 10 a.m. June 15 in the RIMAC Arena, with two student speakers to be selected. (e-mail kberchin@ucsd.edu for details.)

And Revelle College will complete the five undergraduate commencements with a ceremony at 3 p.m. June 15 on RIMAC field. Edwin Hutchins, professor and chair of the Department of Cognitive Science, will address the 750 graduates as guest speaker. (e-mail anna@ucsd.edu for details.)

Ceremonies for graduates receiving their advanced degrees include IR/PS at 10 a.m. June 14 in the Robinson Building Complex, for 85 students, and the Graduate Studies and Research Division for 150 graduates at 3 p.m. June 15 in the RIMAC Arena.
