Pat JaCoby, (858) 534-7404 The Kauffman program builds on an emerging trend among colleges and universities to expand entrepreneurship education beyond business schools so that entrepreneurship training and experiences are available across departments and to students of diverse disciplines. “UC San Diego deeply believes that entrepreneurship and technology innovation need to be opportunities presented to our entire community, including traditional students, faculty, researchers, staff and supporters,” noted Robert Sullivan, founding dean of the School of Management at UCSD. “Our proposed initiatives would set the bar for entrepreneurship at research universities, and we welcome this opportunity to play a leadership role.” UCSD will use an initial $50,000 planning grant awarded by the Kauffman Foundation to help fund development of a proposal to be presented this December. The Foundation then will award five to seven challenge grants of up to $5 million based on demonstrated ability in several areas.
These include making entrepreneurship a common and accessible experience for all students, infusing entrepreneurship into campus culture, adopting a unique, innovative and potentially break-away approach, providing support of top university leadership, and positioning UCSD to serve as a model for other colleges and universities. UCSD was among 15 universities
in the U.S. selected by the Foundation to participate in the new program.
