UCSD STUDENT NAMED TO TOP 100 IN THE NATION BY USA TODAY

Doc Khaleghi, a premedical bioengineering major and president of the Associated Students at the University of California, San Diego, has been named by USA Today as one of the top 100 college students in the nation on the basis of scholarship, leadership and extracurricular activities. Khaleghi was selected from among 638 candidates nominated by faculty members of their respective institutions.

In addition to serving as president of the student body at UCSD, Khaleghi, 20, has received recognition as a UC Regents' Scholar and a Robert C. Byrd Scholar. He was awarded research grants by the American Heart Association and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

During the summer of 2000, Khaleghi served as a researcher at the UCSD School of Medicine, conducting clinical research trials on chronic heart failure patients and assisting with all aspects of data analysis and patient recruiting. Previously he had served as an assistant researcher at Scripps Research Institute.

Khaleghi also served as Associated Students' commissioner of Academic Affairs, representing undergraduate students in the governing faculty body of UCSD. He has been a teaching assistant in biology, chemistry, and physics, consistently receiving high praise from his students, and an emergency room volunteer at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

A senior in Revelle College, Khaleghi maintains a 3.6 grade point average and plans to go to medical school.
