The Preuss School mentorship program pairs Preuss students with volunteers who serve as role models, provide career and college advice, and offer general guidance throughout the school year. No training is required and the time investment is flexible. Some mentors meet their students for lunch every other week. Others take their students to attend campus events or visit campus attractions such as the Birch Aquarium. (UCSD staff members can take the campus shuttle and be on the Preuss School campus in minutes.) The Preuss School, a public middle/high school, is dedicated to providing an intensive college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. One of the goals of the school is to provide a mentor for every Preuss student who wants one, and over 200 students are now on a waiting list for mentors. "Our volunteers are integral to the success of the Preuss School, and they are cherished by our students, faculty and staff, says Dr. Doris Alvarez, principal and director. "We feel confident that, when the community and campus learns how many Preuss students are eagerly hoping for mentors, more of our colleagues and friends will become interested in getting to know these wonderful youngsters."
