Preuss School Student Honored for Writing Skills

By Pat JaCoby

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has recognized a student at the Preuss School at the University of California, San Diego, for her writing and the school’s Department of English for its instructional program.

Crystal Marich, a senior at the Preuss School, was one of 628 high school seniors cited as outstanding writers in the 2005 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing contest. The recipients were chosen from 2,359 students nominated in their junior year by their teachers from the U.S., Canada, the Virgin Islands and American Schools Abroad.

The 48th annual NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing recognizes writing excellence based on students’ samples of their own best prose or verse, and on impromptu themes that are written under supervision. A team of English teachers judges the writing, looking especially for writing that demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.

Crystal received her certificate from Doris Alvarez, Preuss School principal, during a brief presentation November 2.
