UCSD’S NORTH COASTAL SERVICE PROGRAMS
TO BE HIGHLIGHTED AT CHANCELLOR DYNES’ VISIT

Community service programs which the University of California, San Diego sponsors in the North County coastal area will be spotlighted during a 4 p.m. reception and discussion with community members, hosted by UCSD Chancellor Robert C. Dynes Jan. 25 at the Carlsbad Community Library.

Steve Hart, a UCSD alumnus and co-founder of ViaSat Inc. in Carlsbad, will introduce Chancellor Dynes, who will share news of the University and highlight UCSD’s numerous array of services available to residents in the North Coastal region.

Exemplifying those programs will be speakers such as Lourdes Duran, director of Casa de la Clase Magica in Solana Beach, a program which helps children, adolescents and adults in a predominantly Mexicano community prepare academically and socially to succeed in school. Mark Sawyer, M.D., UCSD Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics, will describe the Partnership of Immunization Providers, a program to improve the delivery of immunizations for preschool children. The Vista Community Center in Oceanside is a site for this program.

Also speaking will be Kathleen Stoughton, director of the University Art Gallery, who conducts introductory art tours at UCSD for school children. Students from the San Dieguito Academy recently visited the UCSD art gallery, outdoor sculpture collection and crafts center and attended a musical performance as part of this program.

Josh Steele, who grew up in the coastal area and was a UCSD Regents Scholar and 2000 graduate, will discuss his transition from local schools to UCSD to a microbiology position at CalBioMarine in Carlsbad.

Maps indicating UCSD programs in the North Coastal area will be distributed, as well as a directory of UCSD’s 250 ongoing service programs in which faculty, students and staff volunteer in K-12 classrooms, clinics, community centers and neighborhoods throughout San Diego County.

The North Coastal reception is the first of five regional visits to be held by Chancellor Dynes to celebrate UCSD’s 40th anniversary. The University is marking this anniversary by giving 40 gifts of public service and encouraging the community to participate in its numerous community service programs throughout the County.
