TALK ON ‘THE RIGHTEOUS’ TO BE GIVEN AT UCSD
DEC. 2 BY HISTORIAN OF HOLOCAUST AND WWII

A talk on “The Righteous—Non-Jews Who Helped Jews During the Second World War” will be given at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in Price Center A at the University of California, San Diego, by Sir Martin Gilbert, C.B.E., one of the 20th century’s foremost historians of World War II, the Holocaust and the founding of modern Israel.

Gilbert will tell how, as the Third Reich carried out its program to exterminate European Jewry, many Gentiles risked their careers and lives to conceal and rescue Jewish refugees. His stories on the “Righteous” include such now-famous names as Raoul Wallenberg and Oskar Schindler, as well as ordinary people who exercised ordinary decency in extraordinary times.

He will be introduced by William Propp, director of the Judaic Studies Program at UCSD. The program, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Price Charities and the Judaic Studies Program.

Gilbert, the Herman Wouk Distinguished Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies at UCSD, became the official biographer of Winston Churchill in 1968. He has published six volumes of Churchill biography and edited 12 volumes of Church documents. His other publications include two comprehensive general histories, Second World War and First World War.

Among his books on Jewish themes are a general history, The Holocaust: The Jewish Tragedy, and a History of Israel, as well as Jewish History Atlas. His television work has included the script of the Academy Award winning film Genocide.

Gilbert was knighted in 1995.
