UCSD UNDERGRADUATES ARE SELECTED Two students from the University of California, San Diego are among 18 University of California undergraduates selected to present their research at a UC Day keynote luncheon in Sacramento March 19. UC Day, entitled “UC: Connecting with California’s Communities,” will bring alumni associations, alumni, donors, and friends of the nine UC campuses to Sacramento to discuss with their elected representatives issues of concern to the University. The University of California Office of Research organizes an annual contest to recognize outstanding undergraduate researchers at UC Day—faculty deans from each of the campuses select the best undergraduate researchers from academic departments campuswide. The result: two outstanding undergraduate researchers from each campus present their research at UC Day. The two UCSD students chosen to present their research will be honored alongside their faculty advisors. Timothy Barder, in the Department of Chemistry, will present “Synthesis and Fluorescence Studies of Aryl-Substituted Bipyridines and Terpyridines.” Etienne Pelaprat, of the Cognitive Science Department will present, “User Activity Histories and Multiscale Visualizations.” According to representatives at the Office of the President, “[The students’] participation in UC Day underscores the many ways that UC's undergraduate research helps the state: It prepares students for careers in science and technology, the cornerstones of California's new economy, and provides opportunities for students to study firsthand the complex social issues facing California.” Posters highlighting the contest winners’ research will be displayed outside of the Governor's Office in the Capitol during UC Day activities, March 18-19.
