UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Vice Chancellor Joseph Watson will serve as grand marshals for the 27 th annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade Jan. 13, joined by hundreds of UCSD students for the march through San Diego.
Following the parade some 50 UCSD students will work with San Diego Youth and Community Services and Volunteer San Diego in helping to refurbish a center for at-risk youth as part of UCSD’s fifth annual MLK Jr. Day of Service in tribute to the life, lessons and legacy of Dr. King.
Additionally, Chancellor Fox will address San Diego County educators at a breakfast meeting in Christ United Presbyterian Church preceding the annual parade.
UCSD’s theme for this year’s various MLK Jr. events is “Freedom Through Education.”
Among the more than 500 parade participants in the UCSD unit will be students, staff, faculty, alumni, and Medical Center, Preuss and Gompers school representatives.
Monday following the parade UCSD will sponsor a table at the 13th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast given by the United African American Ministerial Action Council board and attended by more than 1,000 community representatives.
