From workshops on how to get hired at UCSD to advice on how to apply as a student, from rocking to bands to climbing a rock wall, Open House at the University of California, San Diego on Oct. 21 promises a kaleidoscopic variety of activities for all interests and ages.

The event theme, UCSD Rocks!, pays homage to “Bear,” the newest addition to the esteemed Stuart art collection on the UCSD campus, as well as the many rockin’ demonstrations, music and displays throughout the campus. Hours for the open house are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All events and parking are free and open to the public.

Attendees will be greeted by ambassadors with free bottles of water, a program and map to the various locations for a children’s fun zone, workshops, displays, tours, food and entertainment. Activities are located along Library Walk, the Price Center, on Warren Mall and the School of Medicine Leichtag lawn.

The Career Fair in the Price Center Ballroom will offer an opportunity to meet face-to-face with UCSD department hiring managers and Human Resources contacts. Career panels will offer experts in their fields who will talk about skills needed to be successful in specific professions. Multiple “How to Get Hired at UCSD” workshops will focus on creating a competitive online resume/application. Attendees are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resume for distribution with managers.

Tours for perspective students and their parents, led by UCSD students, will depart every half hour beginning at 10 a.m. at Center Hall on Library Walk. Parents and students can attend workshops in Center Hall on freshman and transfer student admission requirements, financial resources available to help pay for college tuition, and housing and dining services.

A first-time “battle of the bands” will feature college pep and marching bands from UC Irvine, SDSU, Pomona College and UCSD competing for honors at the base of the Snake Path on Warren Mall.

A cutting-edge mix ranging from robots to race cars will be offered by Jacobs School of Engineering members on Warren Mall. Projects for children will include the making of geodesic sculptures, space-age “goo” and mousetrap race vehicles. Other projects and displays include a steel bridge, formula race cars, a human powered submarine and an “artificial intelligence” game.

For a personalized, one-time event, attendees can have their photos taken with “Bear,” the enormous Stuart Collection sculpture, and view the photos later on the Open House website.

Other activities on Warren Mall include a whale that attendees can walk through, staffed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a rock wall, a giant slide and a jump house.

At the School of Medicine, free screening will be available for asthma or hypertension, and information offered by experts ranging from the Department of Plastic Surgery to the Poison Prevention Program.

Geisel Library will offer performances by the Teeny Tiny Pit Orchestra and Dr. Seuss readings for children, while booths staffed by various UCSD colleges and departments will stretch along Library Walk. Among the 13 food booths attendees can find Thai tea, hot dogs, tacos, root beer floats, potstickers, samosas, sandwiches and spaghetti.

Entertainment in the Price Center Plaza will feature “V Rox” and “Cheeky” bands, acapella singing by the Daughters of Triton, salsa dancing by Rueda de Casino, hip hop dancing by Ascension Hip Hop and drumming by Asayake Taiko.

The UCSD Alumni Association will sponsor a “Rocktoberfest Beer and Brats Garden” from 11:30 to 2 p.m.on Warren Mall featuring the sounds of three bands, including “Fish and the Seaweeds,” a Jimmy Buffett-style band, TC4 jazz group, and “Dreaming of Jeannie” with UCSD staff participants.
