EVENT: Open House at the University of California, San Diego

UCSD opens its doors to the community for a day of free family fun, entertainment, and education. UCSD: Oceans of Fun is the theme of this year’s celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, Oct. 25, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the UCSD campus, with hours extended to 4 p.m. at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

LOCATION: The UCSD campus and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. (Map attached) Free parking is available on the UCSD campus and shuttles will run continuously to activities at Scripps. Attendees will be greeted with free bottles of water and directions to children’s entertainment, workshops, displays, tours, food, and entertainment along Library Walk and at the Price Center and Warren Mall on the UCSD campus and on the Scripps campus along the Pacific Ocean.

BACKGROUND: The UCSD Open House annually invites the San Diego community to an up-close-and-personal look at the campus and its activities and this year in particular at the activities of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography over its 100 years. At Scripps, there will be surfing clinics, a tour of Scripps Pier and the Director’s House, as well as opportunities to view creatures of the deep, listen to whale and dolphin sounds, learn about tide-pool animals and create art work using marine materials. On the UCSD campus, visitors may tour the Supercomputer Center, the Jacobs School of Engineering which contains tools to test earthquake damage, and they may view a human powered submarine, an unmanned airplane, and a formula race car developed by engineering students. There will be continuous campus tours for prospective students and their parents and admissions information, including financial resources available to UCSD students.
