JULY 7 WORKSHOP TELLS PARENTS HOW TO KEEP 
CHILDREN ON TRACK FOR COLLEGE DURING SUMMER

Want to keep your child’s mind academically sharp over summer vacation? Attend a free workshop for middle school and high school parents on Saturday, July 7 to get information on how to keep young students motivated for school and on track for college.

The event, titled College Prep Survival: What Every Parent Should Know, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Malcolm X Public Library (Multipurpose Room), 5148 Market Street, San Diego, one block from the Euclid Avenue trolley stop. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children.

The workshop is sponsored by the University of California, San Diego, in partnership with the California Student Opportunity Access Program (Cal-SOAP).

Featured will be presentations by:

• ·     Douglas Luffborough, motivational speaker, who will speak on the power and impact that parental involvement has on children’s academic success and future.
  
  

• ·     Jan Osterbye of Cal-SOAP, and Maria Moore of San Diego City Schools’ Ballard Parent Center, will provide parents with important tips on how to work with their children this summer and throughout the year in improving study and homework skills.

•       Christopher Montoya, youth counselor with Breaking Cycles (a unit of San Diego Youth & Community Services), will instruct parents on how to deal with common problems that can affect children’s academic performance, such as peer pressure, gang affiliations and substance abuse.    
   
  

•        Zoniece Jones, co-founder of Pizazz, a San Diego academic tutoring/mentoring organization, will tell parents how to locate an effective tutor and mentor for their child.                                                             

The workshop will also include Spanish translation, free food, on-site child care, study aid give-aways, door prizes and musical entertainment.
