Public Invited to Visit Diverse “Planet of Slums”

May 11, 2006

Mike Davis, author of the book “Planet of Slums,” will give a lecture about that topic at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, in the Great Hall of International House on the campus of the University of California, San Diego.

Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Davis, a MacArthur Fellow and resident of San Diego, is also the author of several other books, including “City of Quartz,” “Late Victorian Holocausts,” and “The Monster at Our Door.”

In “Planet of Slums,” he provides a global overview of the diverse religious, ethnic and political movements competing for the hearts and minds of the urban poor. He surveys Hindu fundamentalism in Mumbai, the Islamist resistance in Casablanca, street gangs in Cape Town, Pentacostalism in Kinshasa, and revolutionary populism in La Paz.

Copies of Davis’ book will be available for purchase, and the author will sign books following the lecture.

The event will be hosted by the UCSD Social Sciences & Humanities Library, and is sponsored by the University Librarian, the deans of the Division of Arts & Humanities and the Division of Social Sciences, and the director of the Urban Studies and Planning Program.

For more information, contact Allie Carr in the Social Sciences & Humanities Library at (858) 534-2490.
