February 27, 2007

UCSD’s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) will sponsor its first annual International HIV/AIDS Research Day on Friday, March 2, in the Leichtag Biomedical Research Building Auditorium.  The event is sponsored by CFAR’s International Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2005 in order to foster international HIV/AIDS research in developing countries.

The annual research day will feature lectures by prominent HIV/AIDS researchers from around the world, as well as UCSD faculty members.  Guest speakers include James Hakim of the University of Zimbabwe, Kevin DeCock of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and Mamudo Ismail of Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, in Mozambique.

This event is one of four opportunities for international collaboration in HIV/AIDS research offered by the International Program. Its primary goal is to showcase results arising from international research projects conducted by and between CFAR members and foreign collaborators.

As part of its mission, the UCSD CFAR International Program also funds three grant opportunities:  international pilot project grants, made available for new HIV/AIDS investigators for work in Mexico, Brazil and South Africa; visiting scholar grants, for investigators in developing countries who wish to further their education and scientific techniques by working with a CFAR collaborator for up to one year; and travel grants for UCSD CFAR members to travel to a developing country for the purpose of grant proposals or scientific manuscripts.  More information about these funding opportunities is available at http://cfar.ucsd.edu/.

The UCSD Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) was established in 1994. The Center has almost 200 affiliated investigators from four San Diego research institutions: UCSD and the VA San Diego Health Care System, The Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute and La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology
