The Center for Ethics in Science and Technology and the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium – a collaboration among UC San Diego, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and the Scripps Research Institute – will host a free, public Stem Cell Ethics Conference from 1-6 p.m. on Friday, April 6, at the Salk Institute.
The conference will promote community discussion about some of the ethical challenges associated with human embryonic stem-cell research. In particular, the program will focus on oocyte and embryo donation, as well as on the necessary milestones preceding clinical testing of treatments using this new technology.
The public is invited, and attendance is free, but registration is required at www.ethicscenter.net
Laurie Zoloth, Ph.D., director of the Center for Bioethics, Science and Society and professor of medical ethics and humanities at Northwestern University, will be the event’s keynote speaker.
The conference will consist of three panels: Donation of Eggs and Embryos; Strategic Plans for Stem Cell Research; and Milestones for Clinical Trials. Moderators and panelists include representatives from local, state, and national universities and research organizations.
The conference is organized by Michael Kalichman, Ph.D., co-director of the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology and director of the Research Ethics Program at UC San Diego; Lawrence M. Hinman, Ph.D., director of the Values Institute and professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego; and Evan Snyder, M.D., Ph.D., professor and director of the Stem Cells and Regeneration Program at the Burnham Institute.
