UCSD Cancer Center Marks 25 Years Of Service To Community
Anniversary
Gift: Free Pamphlets for Preventing, Dealing with Cancer
By
Nancy Stringer
The Rebecca
and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is celebrating its 25th Anniversary
and, as a gift to the community, has created three new pamphlets
with helpful information from the experts at the Cancer Center.
Each pamphlet is packed with 25 tips – for cancer patients,
for family members and friends of someone with cancer, or for
those who want the latest information on how to reduce their
risk of developing cancer.
To request any or all
of the free pamphlets, call the Cancer Center Foundation Office,
858-822-0023, and ask for: When You Have Cancer, When
a Loved One Has Cancer, or Reducing Your Cancer Risk. The pamphlets
are also available for immediate downloading from the Cancer
Center website. Just visit www.cancer.ucsd.edu and click on
“25th Anniversary.”
The Cancer Center of
25 years ago holds little resemblance to the major center it
has become today. Center Director Dennis Carson, M.D., said:
“Looking at our nationally recognized comprehensive cancer
center now, it is difficult to believe that it began with just
four patient examination rooms, one physician’s office
and two small administrative offices.”
Today the Cancer Center
has more than 275 physicians and scientists, receives approximately
$200 million in research funding each year, and has more than
150 clinical trials available at any given time. The Center
is preparing for the April 2005 opening of its new home –
a 270,000-square-foot facility that will bring together outpatient
care, laboratory research, clinical trials, and cancer prevention
and community outreach activities under one roof.
Founded in 1979, the
Cancer Center has grown to become one of the nation’s
leading centers providing advanced patient care, conducting
research, teaching the next generation of cancer specialists,
and serving the community. Counted among the Center’s
members are a Nobel Laureate, 12 members of the National Academy
of Sciences, and a past president of the American Association
for Cancer Research. It is the only center in San Diego and
one of just 38 in the nation to hold the National Cancer Institute’s
coveted Comprehensive Cancer Center designation.
