UCSD Physicians Dominate San Diego Magazine “Best Doctors” Survey

In a survey of the region’s medical doctors published in the October issue of San Diego Magazine, more than 90 physicians from the UCSD faculty made the 2003 list of “Best Doctors.” No other San Diego health system had as many physicians named.

The listing includes UCSD physicians who practice at Children’s Hospital and Health Center and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.

In addition, the magazine profiles UCSD’s Dr. Theodore Ganiats, Professor of Community and Family Medicine, and Dr. John Drummond, Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology. An accompanying article about San Diego’s trauma system features Dr. David Hoyt, Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery and Director of UCSD’s Level 1 Trauma Center.

“It’s very gratifying to see the excellence of our clinicians endorsed by our peers in the community,” said Tom McAfee, M.D., Physician in Chief of UCSD Healthcare. “In addition to many superb physicians, we also have a number of highly trained specialists whose unique skills and expertise are sought by patients from throughout the region and from outside of San Diego. As the region’s only university hospital system, it is important that we serve our community with the best physicians providing state-of-the-art health care.”

The survey lists 272 medical practitioners in 30 specialties, chosen from more than 4,000 doctors in the San Diego region. To create the list, San Diego physicians were asked “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, and you could not treat them yourself, to whom would you refer them?” The survey was conducted in collaboration with Best Doctors, Inc. of South Carolina, as part of a national survey of more than a million doctors.

To qualify, each physician must be certified or sub-certified through the American Board of Medical Specialties. According to the magazine, the polling process was “expanded this year to include more doctors affiliated with a wider range of the region’s hospitals and medical groups. These are the physicians the physicians would choose for themselves and their families.”
