“We have worked with McCarthy Construction on many projects over time and are confident of their ability to do a world-class job on a project of this size and complexity,” said Charles S. Kaminski, senior architect with the UCSD Facilities Design and Construction Department. Pre-construction activities, such as site preparation and road realignment, have already begun on the 2.4-acre site, located southeast the UCSD Thornton Hospital on the University’s east campus in La Jolla. Official roundbreaking is scheduled for November and completion of construction on the $100 million facility is planned for fall 2004.
“The Cancer Center represents the best of class in treatment, technology and architecture,” said W. Carter Chappell, president, Southern California Division of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. “McCarthy is privileged to be the contractor for this facility as we continue to serve UCSD, its clients, and the community.” Founded in 1864, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., is now one of the largest and most diversified construction companies in America, with more than $1 billion in annual revenues. The company is headquartered in St. Louis, MO., and its Southern California Division is based in Newport Beach. As of April 2002, the company became 100 percent employee owned. Founded in 1979, the Rebecca
and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is one of just 40 centers in the United
States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive
Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting
basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and
serving the community through outreach and education programs.
