General Contractor Named for
Moores UCSD Cancer Center Building

The University of California, San Diego has named McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., as the general contractor for the 270,000-square-foot Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center building.

“We have worked with McCarthy Construction on many projects over time and are confident of their ability to do a world-class job on a project of this size and complexity,” said Charles S. Kaminski, senior architect with the UCSD Facilities Design and Construction Department.

Pre-construction activities, such as site preparation and road realignment, have already begun on the 2.4-acre site, located southeast the UCSD Thornton Hospital on the University’s east campus in La Jolla. Official roundbreaking is scheduled for November and completion of construction on the $100 million facility is planned for fall 2004.

The Cancer Center building will bring together more than 300 physicians, scientists and professional staff in one state-of-the-art facility, which will house nearly all the center’s outpatient clinical activities, its core research programs, and space for community education and outreach programs. This will be the first time on campus that physicians, patients and their treatment functions, and researchers will be housed together, creating a synergistic environment.

Founded in 1979, the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is one of just 40 centers in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.
