April 10, Stein Institute for Research on Aging Hosts Open House with Guest Lectures, DisplaysThe Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (SIRA) will host its 2001 Spring Opening on Tuesday, April 10, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in Garren Auditorium, Basic Science Building, UCSD School of Medicine, La Jolla.

Two UCSD School of Medicine faculty guest lecturers will share the newest information on diabetes and prostate cancer. Jerrold M. Olefsky, M.D., professor of medicine, will speak on "Diabetes: New Approaches for Treatment and Prevention" and Carol Salem, M.D., assistant clinical professor of surgery, will speak on "The Myths of Prostate Cancer."

Daniel F. Kripke, M.D., professor of psychiatry, will give an overview of SIRA and its programs, and more than 25 student and faculty researchers will present posters summarizing their individual research studies on aging.

Each scientist presenting a poster has received a grant from SIRA for an original research project. These projects help to lay the groundwork for future major research endeavors.

The Spring Opening is an opportunity for scientists who are contributing to our health, well-being and longevity to share their work with each other, SIRA members and the public. The scientists will be available to answer questions about their projects.

The Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging is a non-profit, non-government sponsored organized research unit established in 1983 at UCSD School of Medicine. Their commitment is to advance lifelong health and independence through research, education and patient care.
