UCSD Specialists Named America’s Top Doctors

Seventeen UCSD School of Medicine doctors were recently included in America’s Top Doctors, National 2002, published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., as top specialists in the nation.  The regional guide, now in its second edition, is based on a survey in which thousands of physicians, nurses and health care professionals throughout the nation were asked to rate their peers.

The publisher, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., follows a rigorous screening process led by physicians to select the nation’s top doctors. Using mail and telephone surveys, electronic ballots, and other research, they ask area physicians to identify highly skilled, exceptional doctors. Careful screening of doctors’ educational and professional experience is essential before final selection is made among those physicians most highly regarded by their peers.

The guide profiles more than 4,200 top specialists throughout the U.S. in more than 60 medical specialties and subspecialties, for the care and treatment of more than 1,700 diseases and medical conditions. These specialists are organized geographically.

For the West Coast region, the following UCSD physicians were represented in the following specialties: Stephen Wasserman, M.D., Allergy and Immunology; Richard H. Haas, M.D., and Doris Ann Trauner, M.D., Child Neurology; Edward David Ball, M.D., Director, Bone Marrow Transplant, Medical Oncology; Steven R. Garfin, M.D., Chair, Orthopaedic Surgery; Kenneth Lyons Jones, M.D., Pediatrics; Antonino Catanzaro, M.D., Andrew Ries, M.D., and Lewis Rubin, M.D., Pulmonary Diseases; Stephen L. Seagren, M.D., Radiation Oncology; Karim Valji, M.D., Radiology; and David B. Hoyt, M.D., Director, UCSD Trauma, Burn and Critical Care Services.

UCSD faculty members who also receive Veterans Affairs funding are Douglas Richman, M.D., Infectious Disease; Clifford Walter Shults, M.D., Neurology; David Bruce Granet, M.D., Director, UCSD Ratner Children’s Eye Center; Michael Brage, M.D., Orthopaedic Surgery and Joseph Schmidt, M.D., Surgery.

In a related survey, Holly Salzman, M.D., Family Medicine, was selected as one of America’s Top Doctors in Family Medicine in the Western Region in the May issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.  The magazine, along with other national magazines such as Redbook and Town & Country, has a collaborative relationship for top doctors’ feature articles with Castle Connolly.

America’s Top Doctors is designed to meet the needs of people who can and will travel anywhere in the country to be cared for by a top specialist at an outstanding hospital. A list of UCSD physicians and a complete national listing is available by contacting Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., at 212-980-8230, Ext. 20 or E-mail info@castleconnolly.com
