Gene “Rusty” A. Kallenberg, M.D. 
Named Division Chief of UCSD Family Medicine

Gene “Rusty” A. Kallenberg, M.D., was recently appointed UCSD School of Medicine Division Chief of Family Medicine and Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine and Preventive Medicine.  Kallenberg will oversee all clinical programs in Family Medicine as well as research conducted by the faculty of the Division of Family Medicine and family medicine physician training programs.

In announcing Kallenberg’s appointment, Robert M. Kaplan, Ph.D., chair, UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, said “Dr. Kallenberg was selected after a national search for the person most capable to lead our department and further enhance its already established excellence in teaching, patient care and research. Dr. Kallenberg is an excellent person and an established leader in family medicine.  We are very excited about his potential to lead our clinical programs.” 

Kallenberg received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio, and completed his internship and residency in Family Medicine at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, California.  He was appointed Assistant Professor of Health Care Sciences and Medicine in 1982 at George Washington University.  After becoming Associate Professor, he was named Chief of the Division of Family Practice in 1990, and Assistant Dean for Curricular Projects at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1998.
