Daniel Masys Appointed To
As a component of the National Academy of Sciences, the IOM issues public reports and advises the federal government on issues of medical care, research and education. The Board on Health Sciences Policy is especially interested in emerging fields of scientific research in the health sciences, the relationship between science and regulatory decision making, the education of health and research professionals and the general public, workforce adequacy, and biomedical ethics. Masys brings to the Board his expertise in bioinformatics, which makes vast amounts of complex medical knowledge more accessible with the aid of computers. A former chief of the International Cancer Research Data Bank of the NIH National Cancer Institute, Masys has also served as an advisor to the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy in the area of advanced computing and National Information Structure. Among the 17 members
of the IOM Board on Health Sciences Policy are representatives from UC San
Francisco, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, the National Health Council, Washington
University in St. Louis, Emory University, Albert Einstein College of
Medicine, Research!America, and the Universities of Illinois, Pittsburgh,
Michigan, Virginia and New Mexico.
