The Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego today announced the launch of a Ph.D. program in management, to begin in fall 2009. The Rady School’s Ph.D. program will combine UC San Diego’s faculty expertise, intimate size and rigorous interdisciplinary training for highly qualified doctoral candidates.

“Offering a Ph.D. program allows the university to build on the firm foundation provided by the teaching and research strengths of both the Rady School and UC San Diego as a whole,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.  “The Ph.D. program will allow the Rady School to continue to bring internationally recognized scholars in the areas of finance, decision making, management sciences and strategy, technology innovation and marketing to our campus.”

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) indicates that the U.S. shortage of business Ph.D.s is expected to be 1,000 in five years and nearly 2,500 in 10 years, in both the academic and corporate fields. Graduates with the right background and training have the opportunity to become next generation of professors at the top business schools around the world.

“To help ease the looming shortage of graduating doctoral students, the Rady School is committed to training Ph.D.s to tackle issues such as technological change and expansion into global markets”, said Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan. “Our Ph.D. graduates will have expertise in management with a more specialized focus on the needs of innovation-driven organizations.”

The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego educates global leaders for innovation-driven organizations. A professional school within one of the top-ranked institutions in the U.S. for higher education and research, the Rady School offers a Full-Time MBA program, a FlexMBA program for working professionals, undergraduate and executive education courses. UC San Diego’s lineage includes 16 Nobel Laureates (former and current faculty) and eight MacArthur Foundation award recipients. The Rady School at UC San Diego transforms innovators into business leaders.
