MEDIA ADVISORY

EVENT: Lecture by Walter Kohn, the 1998 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry: "Electronic Structure of Matter - Wave Functions and Density Functionals"

DATE/TIME: Thursday, March 4, 1999, 4 p.m. (Reception begins at 3 p.m. in the Gardner room of the Robinson Building Complex)

LOCATION: Auditorium of the Robinson Building Complex, UCSD’s International Relations and Pacific Studies

BACKGROUND: UC Santa Barbara physics professor Walter Kohn won the Nobel Prize for his leading role in the development of the density-functional theory, which has revolutionized scientists’ approach to the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solid materials in physics, chemistry and materials science.

Kohn conducted early research on density-functional theory as a founding member of UCSD’s faculty and Physics Department. Kohn is the founding father of UCSD’s Judaic Studies Program.

Members of the media are invited to attend the lecture and a reception preceding the event.
