UCSD BIO BOOTCAMP CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON
FORMATION OF LIFE SCIENCE START-UP COMPANIES

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Office of Technology Transfer & Intellectual Property Services (TechTIPS) will present Bio Bootcamp 2003 on
Sept. 26, a half-day conference focusing on the formation of life science start-up companies.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Copley Conference Center at UCSD’s Institute of the Americas; a reception will be held immediately following the conference. Attendees must pre-register with techtips@ucsd.edu or call the TechTIPS office at (858) 534-5815 for more information.

The event will include leading venture capitalists, attorneys, and biotech entrepreneurs who will share their experiences with San Diego area researchers interested in forming new companies. Bio Bootcamp will feature three panels focused on biotechnology, legal aspects and intellectual property, and medical devices.

“This conference will provide an overview on the company start-up process for life science researchers,” said TechTIPS Assistant Vice Chancellor, Alan Paau. “It will give UCSD faculty and local researchers the opportunity to hear first-hand from veteran local entrepreneurs and service providers about their start-up experiences.”

The transfer of technology and the knowledge generated at UCSD creates a direct pipeline to the local economy by forming viable start-up companies and providing firms with technical innovations. TechTIPS facilitates this transfer by managing the university’s intellectual property portfolio, marketing UCSD innovations for potential licenses, and educating the greater UCSD community about the value and benefits of technology transfer for the public good. More than 60 life science start-up companies have been established based on UCSD technologies. Since 1995, upwards of 1900 innovations have been developed at the University, which have resulted in more than 580 issued patents.

Bio Bootcamp is being sponsored by RCT BioVentures West, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and PriceWaterhouse Coopers. Campus support is being provided by VentureForth, a UCSD student entrepreneurial group.
