LESTER THUROW TO ADDRESS "BIOTECH BILLIONS, MICROCHIP
TRILLIONS" AT UCSD ECONOMICS ROUNDTABLE OCT. 26
MIT economist and best-selling author Lester C. Thurow will present
his ideas on "Biotech Billions, Microchip Trillions: New Rules in
a Knowledge-Based Economy," at the Oct. 26 meeting of the
University of California, San Diego Economics Roundtable. The event,
which is $50 per person, will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the UCSD
Faculty Club.
Thurow has been recognized
throughout the world as a leading expert on economic issues. He is the
author of several influential books, including "The Future of
Capitalism," "The Zero Sum Society," and most recently,
"Building Wealth: New Rules for Individuals, Companies, and
Countries in a Knowledge-Based Economy." The recipient of
numerous awards and honors, Thurow has served as an economic
commentator and columnist for several media outlets, including, The
New York Times, Newsweek, and the Nightly Business Report.
In his work, Thurow addresses
the factors driving economic change in the global economy and charts a
course for profiting from today's world in flux. In "Building
Wealth," he describes how, at the beginning of the 21st century,
six new technologies -- micro-electronics, computers,
telecommunications, new man-made materials, robotics, and
biotechnology - are interacting to create a new and very different
economic world. This is an era of man-made, brain-power industries,
says Thurow, in which knowledge is the new basis for wealth.
The UCSD Economics
Roundtable, now in its 10th year, is sponsored by the UCSD Department
of Economics in coordination with UCSD Extended Studies and Public
Programs. The roundtable provides San Diego business professionals and
community leaders with the opportunity to hear the views of renowned
national experts in the fields of economics, finance, business, and
public policy.
