PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE CEO TO DISCUSS STATE OF CALIF. DREAM IN 2000 AND BEYOND AT UCSD ROUNDTABLE JULY 12

Dr. David Lyon, founding president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), will discuss "Looking at 2000: The State of the California Dream" at the July 12 breakfast meeting of the University of California, San Diego’s Economics Roundtable. The event will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the UCSD Faculty Club.

Lyon, an economist who has written widely on California economic and growth issues, has led the PPIC since its founding in 1994 with an endowment by William R. Hewlett. The PPIC is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to independent, nonpartisan research on California’s economic, social, and political issues. Based in San Francisco, the PPIC conducts research on some of the most pressing public policy issues currently facing California, including immigration, welfare reform, educational quality, and health care.

Members of the news media are invited to attend the roundtable free of charge but should make reservations in advance. Those wishing to register for the roundtable, which is $50 per person and includes a continental breakfast, should contact Edie Munk at (858) 822-0510.

The UCSD Economics Roundtable, founded in 1991, provides a forum for local business and civic leaders to exchange ideas and information with world-class economists, public policy makers, and financial experts. Recent speakers hosted by the roundtable, which consists of more than 100 San Diego civic, business, and governmental leaders, include real estate tycoon Sam Zell, investment guru Lou Simpson, Microsoft trust-buster Richard Gilbert, and Dr. Laura Tyson, (former) national economic adviser to President Clinton.
