PRESIDENT CLINTON'S FORMER
ECONOMIC ADVISOR TO
SPEAK AT UCSD'S ECONOMICS ROUNDTABLE FEB. 15
Dr. Janet Yellen, former
Governor of the Federal Reserve System and Chair of President
Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors will speak on "The U.S.
Economic Boom: How Long Will It Last?" from 7:30 to 9 a.m.,
February 15, at the UCSD Faculty Club. Yellen, who just recently left
Washington, is the first featured speaker of the 2000 UCSD Economics
Roundtable.
While at the Federal Reserve,
Yellen earned a reputation for being the most approachable of the
Governors. Well known among policy-makers for her ability the think
broadly about monetary policy and its effects, Yellen also displayed a
knack for explaining economic analysis in clear, forthright language.
"I don’t just want to
see the bottom-line summary," she said. "Why are we in the
(monetary policy) business if not to promote the well-being of
American households. That’s what it’s all about."
Yellen, who had worked at the
Fed and the White House since 1994, was appointed chair of President
Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisors in 1997. She is now at the
University of California, Berkeley where she serves as the Bernard T.
Rocca Jr. Professor of International Business and Trade.
The UCSD Economics Roundtable
is organized by the UCSD Department of Economics in coordination with
UCSD Extended Studies and Public Programs. The purpose of the
Roundtable is to provide top business professionals and community
leaders in the San Diego region with the opportunity to hear the views
and opinions of renowned national experts in the fields of economics,
finance, business and public policy.
In 2000, The UCSD Economics
Roundtable celebrates its tenth year as a significant partnership
between the university and the San Diego business community. Speakers
for this year’s series include Gary E. Johnson, Governor of New
Mexico and Lester C. Thurow, a well-known economist and a professor of
management and economics at MIT.
The cost to attend each
Roundtable is $50 per individual, or a 25% discount when subscribing
to all four 2000 events. For additional information and registration
